Event Series: History Makers Tour

“We Like to Dive Right In” Collections Highlight

September 4 – November 4

Sink down into Wisconsin’s waterways to explore submerged secrets hidden in the depths of history.

Did you know more than 700 ships have met their end in Wisconsin waters? From schooners to steamboats, Wisconsin holds one of the world’s most impressive collections of eighteenth and nineteenth-century shipwrecks. These shipwrecks are a key resource for learning about our maritime history. Though written documents provide much information about the past, they cannot tell the full story. Shipwrecks illustrate how people worked and lived at a specific time. Explore two of Wisconsin’s Great Lakes shipwrecks and learn how water shapes our state’s history and culture.

Exhibit exploring the significance of two shipwrecks in Wisconsin: the Northerner and the Niagara.

The Wisconsin History Makers Tour will bring history directly to local communities in every region of the state through pop-up exhibits, object displays, public programs, outdoor installations, and other activities.

The History Makers Tour is presented by Culver’s and is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Grant Number: MA-253159-OMS-23.
